Separation Score Leaderboard
What is Pitch Separation Score?
Separation Score measures how much a pitcher's pitches diverge at the plate using usage-weighted Euclidean distance. Pitch pairs are weighted by combined usage (geometric mean), so high separation between frequently-thrown pitches matters most. Think sinker/sweeper combos like Blake Treinen.
22+ inches of weighted separation - devastating arsenal
17-22" - strong pitch shape contrast
<17" - pitches move similarly, easier to read
Horiz. and Vert. columns show weighted average separation in inches. Click any column header to sort.
For each pitch type pair in a game:
1. Calculate Euclidean distance: √((pfx_x₁ - pfx_x₂)² + (pfx_z₁ - pfx_z₂)²)
2. Weight by usage: weight = √(usage₁ × usage₂)
3. Sum weighted separations across all pairs
4. Divide by total weight for weighted average
5. Scale to 0-100: score = (avg_sep / 25) × 100
Best Pair = the pair with highest euclidean × weight product. pfx values are converted from feet to inches (×12). Season scores are averages of game-level calculations.
